Puchka or as a lot of Calcuttans call it 'Phuchka' is one of the favourite street delights of Kolkata. You will find the Puchka vendors stationed outside shopping malls, movie theaters, workplaces and at almost every corner of the street, ranging from small to big ones. Just thinking about Puchka waters my mouth! Although it is found in different versions all around the country but for me, nothing beats the taste of the Puchkas in Kolkata. They are simply out of the world! Did you even know the varieties of Puchkas you get at the street side? Well, here is what I found while venturing through the popular Puchka hotspots.
Aloo dum Puchka as the name implies has the spicy Bengali style aloo dum stuffed in it. Topped with spicy tamarind chutney and spices, it is a complete fireball. The best place to try this would be at Lake Kalibari in Southern Avenue.
Ghooghni Puchka has another Kolkata speciality 'Ghooghni' stuffed in it. Like the ghooghni chaat it is garnished with cilantro and onions along with the spices. The puchkawala outside Nandan building at Alipore serves the best Ghooghni Puchka in the city. The third variety of Puchka I relished was the Pakodi Puchka. The filling is made with pakodi and chana and is served with sweet and sour puchka paani . 4 no. tank in Salt Lake is the best place to try this mouth-watering delicacy.
